Facebook gets you shared, Twitter gets the clicks

By Steve Safran

A lot of sites tend to treat their approach to Facebook and Twitter equally. But, despite being labled as “social media,” the two have less in common than we might think. According to a study from SocialTwist, it’s Twitter that gets the click-throughs while Facebook gets you shared. 78% of sharing is now done through Facebook. But Twitter click through rates are about nine times that of Facebook. Writes Fast Company:

This is great news for Twitter, which has hinged its business on Promoted Tweets and Trends, tweet-size ads that companies purchase for $100,000 a day. With such a high click-through rate, it’s no wonder new Twitter CEO Dick Costolo boasted yesterday that the company has “cracked the code on a new form of advertising, and we feel like we’ve got a hit on our hands.”

It’s not all about the click rates, mind you — see this story from last week that illustrates how Facebook is sending more referrals to NPR than Twitter. But keep the numbers in mind as you decide what you want to share and what you hope to have clicked.
