Dungeons & Dragons Live Action Adaptation Ordered at Paramount+

By Jessica Lerner

Ready your daggers, battle axes and long swords. Dungeons & Dragons, the fantasy role-playing game adaptation from Hasbro, has received an eight-episode, straight-to-series order from Paramount+.

After co-producing and co-funding the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film, which debuts on March 31, eOne and Paramount Pictures have joined forces on the Dungeons & Dragons television series.

The project attracted interest from several buyers and ultimately found a home at Paramount+ in a competitive market.

It’s not the first time Dungeons & Dragons has been on television. A 27-episode animated series based on the franchise aired on CBS from 1983 to 1985.

In 2000, a poorly received Dungeons & Dragons film debuted on the big screen, inspiring two sequels.

The live-action series is the most recent instance of a resurgence in video game adaptations for television during the past couple of years, joining Halo, the video game adaptation, at the streamer. Other recent examples include the video games Gears of War on Netflix, God of War on Prime Video and The Last of Us on HBO.

The live-action series is expected to be the studio’s most ambitious TV project to date and could introduce a Dungeons & Dragons universe that would encompass both scripted and unscripted programming.
