'Breaking Bad' does good with charity fundraiser on Reddit

By Cory Bergman

I’m a huge fan of social good efforts tied to TV, and the cool kids on Reddit have whipped up a charity fundraiser tied to the hit AMC series, “Breaking Bad.” The idea was sparked by Luis Moncada, one of the actors on the show, who wanted to help a charity called “A Place Called Home.” The LA-based nonprofit helps educate children about gang violence and drug abuse.

So the Reddit community — there’s a Breaking Bad subreddit — decided to open a “Breaking Good” crowdfunding account to help. At the same time, Moncada and fellow Breaking Bad actor Rodney Rush jumped on Reddit to answer questions from fans, helping drive more awareness. As of this writing — the campaign started yesterday — they’ve raised nearly $3,000.

“I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing cause,” Moncada wrote. “Educating people and helping our kids about the reality of gang life has been very dear to my heart for a very long time.”

Good stuff. Last month, we wrote about the increasing role that Reddit is playing in social TV, as the popularity of TV show subreddits continues to grow.
