The television series halted production in September following the Queen’s passing as a show of respect. The series also saw viewership surge after the Queen’s death.

The Royal Family will likely face their greatest battle in the upcoming season as the public openly questions their place in ‘90s Britain.

Journalists, biographers and historians have covered and interpreted this as a difficult decade for the Royal Family.

“That’s the amazing thing about playing these people at this time, because, in the journey of The Crown so far out of all the seasons, this is the most visual content we have of the Royal Family,” Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Princess Diana this season, said in a statement. “In the ‘90s everything had started to be filmed and also it was the birth of the 24-hour news cycle so there’s just this incredible amount of content that we have access to.”

The series is currently in the middle of shooting its sixth and reportedly final season.

Although specifics have been kept under wraps, Season 6 appears to center on the 1990s before Princess Diana died in 1997.
