The Expensive Cost of Books in Uganda

By Dianna Dilworth

Readers in Uganda have a tough time finding books and when they do find them, the cost is exorbitant.

For example, according to a report from BBC.com, Nothing Left To Steal by Mzilikazi Afrika cost about $42 in local stores, about the same as a week’s worth of groceries. The BBC explains:

On internet shopping sites the best-selling memoir goes for less than a third of that price but deliveries to Uganda are not straightforward.

I did splurge once on a book by Guinea’s revolutionary leader Ahmed Sekou Toure. It set me back $60 – the pan-Africanist in me got the better of me that day.
