Romance Editors Rally Around Stricken Author

dawn-thompson-headshot.jpgAs Regency and paranormal romance author Dawn Thompson (left) recovers from injuries sustained in a recent fall, her fellow authors and other publishing colleagues are rallying to raise funds for the expenses not covered by her insurance. Because Thompson is a relatively new author, her royalty checks haven’t started coming in yet, explains Deborah Macgillivray in an email that’s circulating online. So Macgillivray got together with editors at Kensington, where she and Thompson are published, and organized a raffle for manuscript consideration.

For $100, aspiring romance authors can enter into a drawing to have their stories read by veteran editor Hilary Sares, who will give each of fifteen winners a one-page critique of their manuscripts. (Runners-up will be able to submit partials to editors at other Dorchester imprints.) According to Macgillivray’s announcement, the editors are open to the possibility that any of the winning entries might turn out to be publishable. Feel free to make your own witty remark about how this is no more of a crapshoot than the usual submission process…
