Back in July, I wrote about the imminent return of Egg Fu to DC Comics…this being the character music/comics critic Douglas Wolk describes as “the Very Most Racist Super-Villain of All Time.” Another piece of the puzzle fell into place Wednesday, as the latest issue of the weekly 52 depicted a secret colony where supervillain scientists are given free rein, one of whom identifies the location as “Oolong Island.” Although there is an island by that name off the coast of South Korea, Oolong has a special place in DC history as…the site of Wonder Woman’s first confrontation with Egg Fu.
I’ll concede that this isn’t conclusive, but that circumstantial evidence sure does pile up neatly. And the whole “research facility for mad scientists” plot device alone is pretty damn awesome, no matter which evil genius turns out to be behind it. It’s the sort of high camp that we need to see more of in comics!
