During an interview with CBS News, Danielle Steel refused to label her books as “romance novels.” Her interviewer pointed out several “romance novel” characteristics found in many of her titles; she still insists they do not belong in the genre. The embedded video contains the complete interview.
The author has a bibliography listing 113 titles and continues to write constantly. She usually publishes 3 books a year. Right now, she has two novels in development. Adult fiction aside, she has also written non-fiction, poetry, and children’s books.
Steel claims: “They’re not really about romance. It’s an element in life. But I think of romance novels as more of a category, and I write about the situations we all deal with. Loss and war and illness and jobs and careers, and good things, bad things, crimes, whatever. And I really write more about the human condition.” (Via the Guardian)
