Amazon Employees Attempts Suicide at Work

An employee at Amazon attempted suicide this week by jumping from the roof of the company’s Seattle headquarters.

Before doing so, the unnamed individual sent a farewell email to CEO Jeff Bezos and hundreds of co-workers. According to reports, he had recently tried to change departments but was denied the transfer and was put on the company “improvement plan.” Bloomberg has the scoop:

The man had recently put in a request to transfer to a different department, but was placed on an employee improvement plan, a step that can lead to termination if performance isn’t improved, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing company personnel matters. More than 20,000 people work in multiple buildings at Amazon’s headquarters.

The man survived the fall and is now being treated at a hospital in Seattle. Amazon responded with the statement: “Our thoughts are with our colleague as he continues to recover.”

The news comes after a number of profiles last year in The New York Times about the cutthroat workplace environment at the e-commerce company.
