OpenAI Offers Publishers as Little as $1M Per Year

OpenAI has offered some media firms as little as between $1 million and $5 million annually to license their news articles for use in training its large language models, according to two executives who have recently negotiated with the tech company. (The Information)

This is one of the first indications of how much artificial intelligence companies plan to pay for licensed material. It sits alongside a recent report saying that Apple is looking to partner with media companies to use content for AI training and is offering at least $50 million over a multiyear period for data. OpenAI said it’s talking with dozens of publishers about striking deals to license their articles—a broader effort than was previously known—as the startup looks for content to train its AI models. (Bloomberg)

The firm previously inked a deal in December with publishing giant Axel Springer, the parent company of Politico and Business Insider, as well as reaching an agreement with The Associated Press last summer. (NY Post)
