Joanne Lipman Named Editor in Chief of USA Today

Joanne Lipman has been named editor in chief of USA Today, a role she will serve in as she continues her current duties as chief content officer of the USA Today Network. (Fishbowl)

Lipman joined Gannett 15 months ago to create an investigative network of the company’s 109 community papers. Lipman said she sees her new post as a way to create still more original national content in USA Today’s digital and print reports. (Poynter)

When Lipman, former deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, joined Gannett in December 2015 as chief content officer, she had already overseen editorial for the USA Today Network, which comprises the national daily and Gannett’s 100 local publications, and encompasses some 3,000 journalists. Lipman will continue to serve as chief content officer, reporting to Maribel Wadsworth, Gannett’s senior vp and chief transformation officer. (Variety)

Lipman will be the first woman to ever hold the top editorial role at USA Today. She was the first female deputy managing editor of the Journal, and founding editor in chief of Condé Nast’s Portfolio magazine. (Fortune)
