Facebook Plans to Launch Watch-Like News Tab

By Christine Zosche

Facebook wants to launch a dedicated tab within its app to aggregate content from news publishers, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during a conversation with Springer CEO Mathias Doepfner Monday morning. (Variety)

The tab would feature only “high-quality” articles. Zuckerberg even said he would pay publishers for their articles. Facebook would not charge users for access to the tab. (Mashable)

The timing of Zuckerberg’s remarks is notable, given last week’s rollout of Apple’s news and magazine subscription service. As Apple has, Facebook may recruit editors, but Zuckerberg told Doepfner he wasn’t sure whether to let users select most of what they see in the tab or whether staff members should curate it. Both outgoing product boss Chris Cox and Campbell Brown, the company’s head of news partnerships, have championed the project, and Facebook has tested the idea of a dedicated news tab internally. (Recode)
