Tools of the Trade: Brian Berner of Spotify

By Kyle O'Brien

Tools of the Trade is an AgencySpy feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Brian Berner, global head of advertising sales at Spotify.

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

It would have to be my AirPods and hotspot. This dynamic duo works hand in hand to help me stay connected and tuned in wherever I go.

Why is it your favorite?

My AirPods and hotspot are critical to how I work and function, as my role requires a lot of domestic and global travel. Since I’m typically on the move, these tools make it easy to stay connected and productive. In fact, I’m currently on an hour-long commute emailing and taking calls from SR-210 in Utah. It’s also how I stay inspired and connected, whether listening to a podcast like The Bill Simmons Podcast or musical artists like Zach Bryan, AirPods are my window to culture.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

Funny enough, I was actually looking to purchase another product when I was upsold by an in-store sales person.

How does it help you be successful?

Staying connected and productive while I’m on the go is crucial for success in my role, and it’s equally important in my personal life. I am a father of four, which makes for quite the fun, yet chaotic work/life balance with my wife and children. When I’m not traveling, I am still able to stay connected in between activity pickups, or before a weekday sporting event. Additionally, as I continue to focus more on my physical health, a nice “walk & talk” for my 1:1s allows me to stay active while driving collaboration with my colleagues.

Does it have sentimental value?

Not really. I like to prioritize face-to-face time when I can. However, technology is incredible at driving efficiencies in my life, and helping me to balance what is important for me. There’s still something to be said about the energy of an in-person brainstorm session, and obviously nothing beats an uninterrupted family dinner.

Do you think your tool could go TikTok viral? Why or why not?

The way I use it, probably not. But I’m sure that someone, somewhere in the world has gone viral using AirPods and a hotspot before.
