SVP, Group Creative Director and H&R Block Lead Shannon Washington Leaves Deutsch L.A.

Deutsch’s Los Angeles offices said a sad goodbye to Shannon Washington (portfolio here) last week.

The group creative director came aboard last summer to lead creative on H&R Block after working on CoverGirl and Chase at Droga5 New York. She reported directly to the agency’s chief creative officers Pete Favat and Brett Craig during her tenure, which lasted approximately 10 months.

According to an agency spokesperson, Washington has left to pursue an unspecified venture. We can confirm that it does not concern her past work with a certain hip-hop impresario.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Pete, Kim and the rest of the Deutsch LA team for opening their doors and allowing me to build an amazing team for an iconic brand,” Washington said. “Together, we crafted a new look and language for H&R Block and introduced a groundbreaking new character that people genuinely love—that doesn’t happen every day.”

She continued, “Ironically, it was this that inspired me to own my truths and accept an opportunity that will push my personal and professional evolution. As to what that is? I’ll let the work speak for itself. I wish the entire Deutsch family the very best and leave on the highest of notes.”

A Deutsch representative added, “Shannon’s creative leadership on H&R Block has brought the brand to a new level of humanity. Closing out the 2019 tax season with a bang, she’s set H&R Block up for success in the coming years and we’re so proud of the work she’s done with us. One of the things we love about Shannon is her entrepreneurial drive and we’re rooting for her new venture. We love you Shann!”

Prior to joining Droga5, Washington held top digital creative roles at Time Inc. operation INVNT as well as Grey and beauty@Gotham. She started her agency career as an art director at Carol H. Williams advertising. She was recently named a “Next Gen CEO” by Refinery29.

Below is one of Washington’s most-viewed spots for H&R Block as well as her acceptance speech upon receiving the One Club creative award at last year’s Adcolor event.
