Denver Broncos quarterback/alleged collegiate sexual assault perpetrator Peyton Manning‘s announcement that he will end his career following Super Bowl 50 is receiving its fair share of press. But the big game may see another notable retirement: Havas’ “The Most Interesting Man In The World” character for Dos Equis, played by Jonathan Goldsmith.
Deadline reports that a source informed the publication that the agency has filmed its final “The Most Interesting Man In The World” spot for Dos Equis to air during the game Sunday.
According to said source, the spot will feature Goldsmith’s character traveling to Mars, where he’s left stranded. (Sound familiar?)
That leaves us to wonder whether the agency really plans to retire the character, or simply introduce a storyline that allows it to draw the campaign out for at least another year. The former would certainly be understandable; after ten years the character has arguably become a misogynistic parody of itself.
It would also be understandable if the agency remains reluctant to part ways with such a recognizable character.
As contrarians, we have to hope he goes out in a Tarantino-worthy blaze of glory. Who’s taking bets?
