Chris Farley’s Family: Direct TV Ad Was “Great Tribute” to Their Son

By Matt Van Hoven

Direct TV made waves when a recent reworked scene from Chris Farley and David Spade’s Tommy Boy was used to promote the satellite television provider’s service. Deutsch created the piece.

Asylum contacted Direct TV and Spade, who commented on the mini-controversy that arose around the ad. If you don’t recall, Farley died in 1997 due to an overdose, which resulted in heart failure.

“‘When DIRECT TV came to me and the Farley family with this idea about ‘Tommy Boy,’ we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was. It is a clever homage to my friend and a movie that we loved doing,’ said Spade.”

“…A spokesperson for Direct TV told us, ‘We should look to Chris’ family and friends for the ultimate opinion on this subject. They were involved from the beginning of this project and felt that the spot was a great to tribute to Chris.'”

So it seems that Farley’s fans are the most upset, but for many it still felt too soon.
