Call it a “fast food trade war” if you will but if you’re in the Woodbridge, VA area and happen to stumble upon one of these WW II-inspired leaflets, a joint called BBQ Post 401 will exchange any quarter-pound burger, from no matter where for a hickory smoked BBQ sandwich. The only question we have concerning the word “free” is that you have already paid for your burger, so even though you’re getting a free sandwich, you still had to pay money for something.
The strategy, whipped up by Durham, NC-based shop The Republik,, is to compete on taste with the six fast food restaurants that are all within one-half mile of BBQ Post 401 (a Mickey D’s is the closest). The leaflets will be handed out in the immediate area, in downtown Fredericksburg, and at the University of Mary Washington campus, five minutes away by car. All exchanged burgers will be donated to the Fredericksburg Regional SPCA–hey, someone’s got to eat them after all.
