Advertising in Magazines: Still Grimmy McSadface

By Matt Van Hoven

If you had to guess how many magazines of the 160 monthlies in circulation are up in the first quarter of 2009, what would you say? If 13 of 160 is you answer, then you’re right on.

So far, 2009 has been the worst year for magazine advertising since bombing the hell out of Germany was still in style. This quarter, sales are reportedly down 21%, compared to being down about 5% this time last year.

Sure, Q1 isn’t over yet, but these numbers are presumably based on what mags have sold already. Bottom line &#151 now may be a great time for your brand to get into the magazine space &#151 unless you represent Snuggie (please stop advertising!). Sure, subscriptions may be down overall, but then again so are ad rates &#151 and some advertising is still better than none, especially when it’s cheap.
