Today is CNBC’s 19th birthday. And to celebrate let’s look back at the markets: On April 17, 1989 the Dow was at 2337.79, it’s up 440% in 19 years. The S&P 500 finished at 301.72, up 352%. And the NASDAQ finished this day, 19 years ago, at 417.76, up 463%.
And get this, on April 17, 1989, gasoline was .72 a gallon. Today the average is $2.94 (up 308%.) A barrel of crude went for $21.22; today it hovers around $115, up 442%. Happy birthday? We suppose, for some.
