Gannett to Buy Bergen Record, New Jersey’s No. 2 Paper

By Christine Zosche

Gannett is getting ready to add to its stable of New Jersey papers by snapping up the The Record and other weekly papers now owned by the North Jersey Media Group. The 121-year-old paper—long known as the Bergen Record—is the second-largest daily paper in the state behind the Star Ledger in Newark, which is owned by the Newhouse family. Gannett, the nation’s No. 1 newspaper publisher, owns the Asbury Park Press and five other New Jersey papers. (New York Post / Media Ink)

The sale would bring to an end decades of ownership by the Borg family, which acquired The Record in 1930. North Jersey Media Group also owns The Herald News, dozens of community newspapers in Bergen County and the online hub NorthJersey.com. In addition, North Jersey Media Group does contract printing for other publications, including the New Jersey and Pennsylvania editions of Gannett’s flagship paper, USA Today. (Politico Media)
