Hulu Makes Big Kids Programming Push with New Disney Channel Deal

By Christine Zosche

Hulu, Netflix and Amazon’s battle for children’s programming has become just as heated as the one over shows for adults. Thursday, Hulu landed a big coup in its bid to attract kids to its service: a new deal to stream Disney Channel programming, which has traditionally aired on Netflix. The company announced the deal with the Disney-ABC Television Group for the exclusive SVOD rights to past seasons of seven Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD series. (Adweek)

The deal, the most expansive between the two companies to date, will give Hulu streaming rights to more than 500 episodes and 20 original movies. As part of the agreement, Hulu will become the exclusive subscription streaming home to seven Disney shows, including Zendaya starrer K.C. Undercover and Disney XD animated series Gravity Falls. It also has exclusive rights to all episodes of older shows Dog With A Blog and Austin & Ally. Further, Disney Junior shows Sheriff Callie’s Wild West and Henry Hugglemonster will be exclusive to Hulu. Complete seasons of all shows will be made available to Hulu subscribers later this month and subsequent seasons will be made available in their entirety after the end of each show’s season.
