WOAY Suffers ‘Catastrophic’ Transmitter Failure

By Kevin Eck

Woay_2011WOAY, the Beckley-Oak Hill-Bluefield ABC affiliate, has been off the air since Thanksgiving morning after suffering what the station called, “a catastrophic failure at our transmitter.”

WOAY has a disclaimer up on its website that reads:

We are currently experiencing technical difficulties
WOAY-TV has experienced a catastrophic failure at our transmitter, we are currently working to fix the problem, but waiting on equipment. We don’t have a set time frame for when it will be fixed but we can assure you we’re working our best to get it done. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Al Marra, WOAY general manager, told TVSpy repairs will likely be completed by early this morning.

During the blackout, viewers have been watching out-of-market ABC stations on their local cable or satellite systems. One facebook commenter said DirecTV has replaced WOAY with Charleston ABC affiliate WCHS.
