NBC New York has hired bilingual anchor Gilma Avalos from Dallas, Texas.

This is a return to the Big Apple for Avalos. She started her career at News 12 Bronx and helped pilot News 12 en Espanol.

“Gilma is a great addition to our news team. Her journalistic work as an anchor and reporter will serve our community well,” said Amy Morris, vice president of news. “It is also a homecoming, as Gilma began her career right here in New York. She knows our community and understands the issues that are most important to our viewers.”

Avalos worked at KTVT for five years as a weekday afternoon anchor and reporter. Prior to that she worked at WTVJ, the NBC station in Miami, Fla.

She’s joining Adam Kuperstein on the desk at 6 and 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. She will report during the week as well.

“It is incredibly exciting to return to New York, the place where I began my professional career, met my husband and covered stories that helped and informed viewers,” said Avalos. “I have always admired the work of WNBC and cannot wait to join its talented team of news professionals. They have earned the trust of their viewers and represent the very best in journalism. I am honored to be a part of this team.”
