A WCAU photojournalist captured the moment the crowd at a Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia panicked and ran after two police officers were shot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Reporter Leah Uko was interviewing a group of teens when the crowd started running. Uko can be seen on tape saying, “Oh my. Oh my. Oh my,” as people rushed past her and the station’s photojournalist.
The NBC owned station reported that one officer “sustained a graze wound to the head and the other a gunshot wound to the right shoulder.” Both were treated at a local hospital and released.
Uko said she helped three people onto a stage and took cover behind a DJ podium.
Reporter Karen Hua was also there. She said she lay in the dirt inside a tent to avoid the chaos.
“We made a fort around us with catering equipment. Everyone is crying or screaming,” Hua tweeted. She later said “It has just been a night of absolute horror and terror.”
The shooting in Phildelphia happened hours after a gunman killed six and wounded dozens after he opened fire on a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park.
