A longtime NBC Boston anchor lost her job over the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Investigative reporter Ally Donnelly said that after two decades, the station—NECN in Boston—told her she’d no longer be employed as part of a “cost-savings measure.”
“Tough day. I lost the job I’ve loved for nearly 2 decades,” she wrote in a tweet Thursday. “A ‘cost savings measure’ in rough times. Our team did & will continue to do phenomenal work. Our reporters, photographers, editors, producers are totally committed to thoughtful journalism and I will miss them terribly.”
Stations across the country have been hard hit by the financial impact of the pandemic. NBCUniversal, the parent company of NECN, has made other cuts throughout the company, including slashing executive pay by 20%.
Donnelly started at the regional sports network in 1999.
