NBC Boston news director Ben Dobson left the station suddenly on Wednesday after three years in the job.
In a statement, a station spokesperson said Dobson “has decided to leave the station,” and that his last day was Sept. 1. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors,” the spokesperson said.
Dobson didn’t give a reason in an email he sent to staff announcing his departure, but he said that leaving now makes the most sense for the station.
“Today will be my last day with NBC10 Boston/Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra/NECN, as I’m stepping down,” he wrote. “Thank you again for allowing me to lead you through some of the most turbulent times in our lives. I’ll cherish the relationship I have with each of you, and I can’t wait to see what all of you accomplish next.”
Dobson had worked at NECN as the assistant news director between 2014 and 2016. He’s also worked at several other New England stations, including working as an assignment editor at WHDH.

It has been nothing short of a professional honor and a privilege to lead this team over the past few years. We’ve seen a lot together: The move to the BMC, working through a pandemic, reporting on social justice issues on-air and taking an honest look at ourselves internally.
Leaving now that we’ve just wrapped up our successful Summer Olympics, and before the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics start in roughly six months, makes the most sense.
Thank you again for allowing me to lead you through some of the most turbulent times in our lives. I’ll cherish the relationship I have with each of you, and I can’t wait to see what all of you accomplish next.
