Spectrum News 13 photojournalist Jesse Walden is recovering after being critically injured in the pair of shootings that killed reporter Dylan Lyons and a 9-year-old girl.

Spectrum News spoke with Walden about his friendship with Lyons and the support he’s received after being shot.

“You’re losing a friend,” Walden said about Lyons. “You’re not losing an acquaintance or just coworker — it’s someone that made working fun.”

Walden also described Lyons as a go-getter who was happy to be doing what he loved. The two started working at Spectrum News 13 around the same time in 2022 and worked on the night shift together.

Walden added that Lyons had a great sense of humor and also had a “very strong sense of justice.”

“He would really want everyone to follow the rules when it came to people of power,” said Walden.

The station said Walden has a long road ahead in his recovery and that he is hoping to get out of the hospital in the next day or two. But, he said he is amazed at the the support he’s received from loved ones, old coworkers and even strangers.

“Every step of the way, I’ve been blessed,” he said. “People care.”
