Sonia Sotomayor won confirmation Thursday in a 68-31 Senate vote. She will become the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, and the third woman justice in history, when she is sworn in Saturday.
Sotomayor, the 111th justice and the first nominated by a Democrat in 15 years, brings with her a strong history of protecting first amendment rights and a stated willingness to consider allowing cameras in the courtroom.
“I have had positive experiences with cameras when I have been asked to join experiments using cameras in the courtroom,” Sotomayor said during the confirmation hearings.
