Scripps Begins Sale of Radio Stations, Starting in Tulsa

Scripps is selling its five radio stations in Tulsa, Okla., to Griffin Communications for $12.5 million.

Oklahoma-based Griffin is purchasing KFAQ (1170 AM), KHTT (106.9 FM), KVOO (98.5 FM), KXBL (99.5 FM) and KBEZ (92.9 FM).

“We are excited to have the Scripps Radio Tulsa group join our team,” said David Griffin, Griffin Communications CEO and chairman. “They are an excellent group of stations with a great team and are a natural fit with our mission of keeping Oklahomans safe, informed and entertained.”

Griffin owns other Oklahoma media properties including KWTV, the CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City, and KOTV, the CBS affiliate in Tulsa.

“Combining radio with our TV stations, billboards, websites and digital products deepens our commitment to the Tulsa market,” said Griffin, “and provides us an unmatched footprint.”

“Griffin Communications has a long history of serving Oklahomans through a multiplatform approach to news and entertainment,” said Adam Symson, Scripps president and CEO. “We believe our Tulsa radio stations and their employees are a natural fit for Griffin and its vision.”

Scripps is planning to sell it entire radio group, which is made up of 34 stations in markets including Milwaukee; Omaha, Neb.; Boise, Idaho; Knoxville, Tenn.; Wichita, Kan.; and Tucson, Ariz.

“We expect more announcements soon,” Symson said.
