Philly Stations Like Share And Share Alike

When the NBC and Fox O&Os in Philadelphia officially began their local news-sharing venture in January 2009, the broadcasters said they would use it mainly to cover press conferences and other routine events.

As it turns out, the stations are using it for a lot more than that, sometimes churning out 30 or more video pieces a day and most of them are turning up on the air in one form or another.

“We track our usage and it goes anywhere from 68% to 88%, on a weekly basis, of the stories shot versus what we use,” says Kingsley Smith, news director of WTXF, the Fox O&O in TV’s fourth largest market. “That gives us the flexibility to put our staff to work on more in-depth pieces.” More…
