NY Public Broadcaster’s Use of Grants Under Investigation

The New York public broadcaster WNET.org said its subsidiary Educational Broadcasting Corp. is under federal investigation over how it handled grants by the National Science Foundation for production of the PBS children’s math show “Cyberchase.” In a statement, WNET said that the civil investigation, first reported on Sunday by Crain’s New York Business, began in 2008, “and concerns how the grant funds were applied and accounted for under federal grant regulations.”

Kellie Specter, a spokeswoman for WNET.org, said WNET.org expects the investigation, which started with the inspector general of the National Science Foundation, to be referred to the Department of Justice, “where we expect that it will be resolved soon.” The use of some $10.53 million in grants, dating from 2000 on, are under investigation.
