In an emotional exchange, WVEC meteorologist Crystal Harper pulled off her wig on the air to celebrate a year cancer free.

“This has been my security blanket but I’m going to get rid of it, it’s too hot for this,” she said on air Sunday morning.

On May 6, 2017, she made the announcement about her diagnosis on the air. “My doctors are optimistic I will beat this and I have no doubt in my mind that I’ll be cancer free by this time next year.”

Harper joined the Tegna owned station in Norfolk, Va., in 2016 after serving in the Air Force. After a few months of being on the job, her doctors diagnosed her with Hodgkin lymphoma.

“It’s time to start my new life,” she said.
