WSFL-TV, the CW-affiliate in Miami, has named Kerri Cavanaugh as the station’s News Director. Cavanaugh comes to WSFL from Tampa’s WFTS where she spent 11 years, most recently as a senior executive producer. Cavanaugh’s first day will be November 23.
In making the announcement, WSFL’s general manager Howard Greenberg praised Cavanaugh’s work at WFTS, saying that she was integral to the recent growth that the station experienced. Under Cavanaugh, WFTS’s morning show underwent a significant renovation and ratings improved as a result. In 2008, Cavanaugh won the Edward R. Murrow Award for Breaking News.
Her expertise in morning news programming was no doubt a big factor in Cavanaugh’s hiring. WSFL, which ended its 10 o’clock newscast in 2008, has focused on developing its weekday morning show. Launched in April, the WSFL morning show is a joint venture between the station and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Cavanaugh is a graduate of the University of Alabama. She got her start in broadcasting as an associate producer for WDBB in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. From there, she went on to become a New Producer for WPEC in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she worked for three years before taking a post at WFTS.
