Man Climbs Tree to Escape Flood Then Calls KVUE

By Kevin Eck

Kerry Packer climbed a tree to escape floodwaters in Texas. He then called Austin ABC affiliate KVUE.

By the time he called KVUE he’d been up in the tree for nearly three hours. The anchors didn’t know that. They thought he’d been rescued.

“Wait, you’re still in the tree?” asked anchor Brian Mays. Packer answered by saying “Yeah, I’m about 20 feet up a tree.” He said his Boy Scout training was keeping him safe.

The New York Times reports he was rescued at 2:40 p.m.

Packer said his wife was glad he had climbed a lot of trees as a kid.
