Longtime KARE Sports Director Named Main Anchor

Longtime KARE sports director Randy Shaver has been named co-anchor of the Minneapolis-St. Paul NBC-affiliate’s 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts, alongside Julie Nelson.  He succeeds Mike Pomeranz, who left the station this spring for a job with the San Diego Padres.

“This new team underscores KARE 11’s home-grown approach to sharing news and information,” KARE president and general manager John Remes said, announcing the move.  “Julie’s experience and leadership is a perfect pairing with Randy’s news know-how and community commitment.”

Shaver has been with KARE since 1983, and he has served as sports director since 1994.  He will continue to host KARE’s fall high school sports show, “Prep Sports Extra,” which he has done for the past 28 years.

“Obviously I’m excited for a new challenge at KARE,” Shaver said.  “The great news for me is that I still get to do the Prep Sports Extra in the fall which I love so it’s kind of the best of both worlds for me right now.”

The press release announcing Shaver’s appointment ended with a tease: “This is the first of several staff changes that will be announced in the coming weeks.”
