Leaving KARE for Padres Job, Mike Pomeranz Sees Sports Broadcasting as More Stable Than TV News

By Andrew Gauthier

Leaving his main anchor post at KARE for a job with the San Diego Padres, Mike Pomeranz says he has a hunch that sports broadcasting is more stable than TV news.

“I like the fact that Dick Enberg is doing it at 77 years old,” Pomeranz told the Star Tribune recently, referring to the legendary sportscaster who currently does play-by-play for the Padres.

“You can’t watch sports on a larger screen [than the ballpark],” he added.  “Everybody wants to see it on an 80-inch screen.  News you can get on your phone, and it’s trending in different directions.”

KARE announced in February that Pomeranz would be leaving the station for a job with the Padres.  He is set to do pre- and post-game coverage for the baseball team.

In the Star Tribune interview, Pomeranz denies being in line for Enberg’s job, as some have speculated, and also says that he’s not taking a pay cut.

“I don’t discuss my contract in the paper,” Pomeranz told Star Tribune gossip columnist C.J., “but I’m going to tell you flatly, no.”
