After more than 33 years in local TV in San Francisco, sports broadcaster Gary Radnich is retiring from KRON.

The anchor made the announcement on Tuesday.

“It’s time … after 34 years of unprecedented fun and freedom time to retire from KRON,” he said. He plans to maintain his local sports talk radio show which airs daily from 10 a.m to 1 p.m.

“It’s a younger, more fun-loving audience,” he said to the SF Gate of the KNBR listeners. “On TV, you’re talking to Marge in Pleasant Hill. The big questions I got in recent years were, ‘Why are you insulting the anchors?’ and ‘Why aren’t you wearing a tie?’”

Radnich has had an off-the-cuff style since he joined KRON, the independent station that was once the market’s NBC affiliate, in 1985.

He plans to stay with the station through August.
