In New York, WNET Cancels Weeknight Newscast

WNET.org, the New York public broadcaster, is canceling “Worldfocus,” its weeknight newscast seen on public television stations, effective April 2. It will have been on the air for 18 months.

The show won several awards for its international news coverage but began without all its financing in place and never attracted enough corporate and foundation support to be sustainable.

Neal Shapiro, the president and chief executive of WNET.org, acknowledged a shortfall of “a few million dollars” in a statement Friday announcing that “Worldfocus” was being shut down, adding, “We had the misfortune of launching a brand new program into the teeth of the recession.” More…
