Former KVOA GM Jon Ruby Dies

By Chris Ariens

A celebration of life will be held Monday in Tucson for Jon Ruby, former general manager of KVOA Channel 4. Ruby died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia. He was 73.

In August 1974, Ruby headed Southwest, from Chicago, where he’d been hired as GM for KVOA, a job he’d have for the next 28 years. Ruby would take the station from worst to first after just two years. Over the years, he would survive three ownership changes before his retirement in 2002.

Ruby was on the board of the Arizona Broadcasters Association and the NBC affiliates board, including a term as its chairman.
