Former KVOA Anchor Talks About Shoplifting Incident: ‘There Began My Nightmare’

This morning on the Today show, Savannah Guthrie talked with Martha Vazquez a veteran anchor at KVOA in Tucson, who resigned in 2012 after being arrested for trying to steal a $300 hoodie from a Dillard’s department store. Vazquez, who spent 26 years at the NBC affiliate, hasn’t talked about the incident publicly until now.

For Guthrie, it was an easy get: Guthrie grew up watching her, and the two worked together for years at KVOA. “We know there’s a shelf life for anchorwomen in our business,” Vazquez said, adding, “I remember saying to myself, ‘I’m never going to stay around that long to be depreciated. I’m going to leave before they start edging me out.’ And I didn’t.”
