Fewer Americans Watch TV News, Local News Sees Largest Audience Drop

Fewer Americans watch TV news. Among those that do, the majority watch local news over national news.

According to Pew Research report, 50% of adults in the U.S. get news regularly from television. That’s down 57% from 2016.

That drain varies across local, network and cable news. And while local saw the largest decline year to year, it still has the largest audience among the three.


From 2016-2017, local news viewership fell from 46% to 37%, nine percentage points.
