Famous Duo Faces Stiff Competition in Chicago Market

The stage is almost set. And as the August Nielsen TV ratings book released Thursday makes abundantly clear, the challenge facing the iconic TV news anchor duo of Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson is huge. Kurtis and Jacobson return as regular co-anchors of WBBM-Channel 2‘s 6 p.m. newscast Wednesday.

Channel 2 management hopes the two will spark a surge in viewership for its newscasts at both 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., where current solo anchor Rob Johnson debuts with new co-anchor Kate Sullivan on Sept. 13.

But it would take an extraordinarily large number of TV news watchers (189,000 households) to put WBBM on top at 6 p.m. More…
