“I got the call nine years ago, when we lost Darrian,” WMAQ sports reporter Peggy Kusinski said in an interview yesterday with WLS (video above). Fighting back tears, Kusinski remembers thinking “not again” when she heard that Daryl Hawks had died.
Darrian Chapman was the lead sports anchor for WMAQ when he died suddenly in 2002, at the age of 37–just a year younger than Hawks was at the time of his death yesterday.

Chapman died after going into full cardiac arrest while playing hockey at a Chicago ice rink. He had previously suffered a heart attack at the age of 31 as he prepared to cover an NBA game for D.C.’s WRC, where he was working at the time.
The cause of Hawks’s death is not yet known. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
