Boston Stations Adjust to Earlier Morning

Last spring, New England Cable News and Channel 4 (WBZ) started offering 4:30 a.m. newscasts. This month, Fox 25 (WFXT) and Channel 5 (WCVB) joined the News Club for People Who Would Be Better Off in Bed.

Nielsen says there are 375,000 potential viewers out there, although right now only a fraction of that number is finding their way to shows labeled “Eyeopener,” “First Thing in the Morning,” and so on. Who are they? “Older folks, blue-collar people going on or coming off shift, service people, airport people who can’t sleep,” says news consultant Nick Lawler of Frank N.
