WSB-TV in Atlanta is celebrating a major social media milestone.
The Cox Media-owned station hit the one million follower mark on Wednesday. The ABC affiliate now has the largest Twitter following of any local television station in the nation and is the first to cross the million mark.
“To reach one million Twitter followers is a remarkable milestone,” said news director Misti Turnbull. “Twitter confirmed that no other local TV station in the nation has this many.”
WSB-TV has about twice the number of followers as its nearest Atlanta competitor, FOX-owned WAGA.
The station’s Twitter account has grown 129 percent over this time last year. Station management attributes the rapid growth to the big stories that have occurred including the #BlackLivesMatter protests last July, the Presidential race, and the 6th District Congressional Race.
“We show our thanks to our fans and followers every day through the relentless execution it takes to deliver the best and most up to date content wherever and whenever they need it,” said digital content manage, George Marshalek. “Social plays a key part in our daily news delivery with TV, mobile web, Channel 2’s news, weather and traffic apps as well as apps on ‘over-the-top devices’ including Apple TV, Kindle Fire, Roku, and Amazon Echo.”
