Following last week’s tragic Atlanta Spa mass shooting, the Association of Asian American Journalists posted a video showing how news outlets should pronounce the names of some of the victims with help from WAGA reporter Janice Yu and WFOR weekend anchor Frances Wang.
The video guide was Yu’s idea, she told Atlanta Journal Constitution reporter Rodney Ho. The journalist for the Atlanta Fox station came up with the idea after reflecting on her own experience growing up Asian-American.
Yu was born in Korea and remembers changing her name to Janice after years of having her given name, Hye-Jee, mispronounced by teachers.
The video pronunciation guide “just takes that extra step to show that this person matters rather than just stumbling our way through it,” she explained.
