Anchor Leaves Michigan’s WWMT

WWMT-TV (Channel 3) evening weekday anchor Tom Van Howe is leaving the Kalamazoo-based station.

Mark Bishop, WWMT marketing director, confirmed his last on-air broadcast will be tonight. WWMT anchor Jeff Varner will fill in Van Howe.

News director Steve Koles was not available for comment.

Van Howe joined the station in July of 2008 at the age of 63, anchoring the weekday newscasts at 5 and 6 p.m. with anchor Judy Markee.

In an interview with the Press in July of 2008, Van Howe said he joined the station because of the lure of the then-upcoming U.S. presidential election. “These are amazing times,” Van Howe said. “We’re heading into what can only be called a historic election.” More…
