Amid Concerns, NH1 Anchor Joins City Police Commission

NH1 anchor Charlie Sherman has been named to the city of Manchester police commission, despite concerns about what his appointment might mean for other stations covering the police.

The Union Leader reports Mayor Ted Gatsas nominated Sherman for the post, though both the city police chief and at least one member of the commission expressed concerns about a member of the media serving on the commission.

“My concern is equal access to stories and information by all media outlets,” said Manchester Police Chief Nick Willard. “I wouldn’t want the perception that one media organization has access to information others don’t.”

Sherman insisted he would not use the position to empower NH1. “I’m not looking to do this to give news tips to NH1 reporters,” Sherman told a New Hampshire Union Leader reporter last month. “I know where the lines are and I would never, ever cross them. Anyone who knows me knows if I say I would never do something, I won’t.”
