A Third Bidder for The Boston Globe

The California private equity firm that recently bought The San Diego Union-Tribune has become the third bidder offering to buy The Boston Globe from The New York Times Company.

The entry of Platinum Equity into the bidding was reported Friday morning by The Globe and confirmed by people briefed on the bidding, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to discuss the matter. Platinum is competing against two Boston-based groups, one led by Stephen Taylor, a member of the family that owned The Globe until 1993, and another led by Stephen G. Pagliuca, a managing director of Bain Capital Partners, and Jack Connors, a former advertising executive. More…
