With John Miller Joining CNN, Chris Licht Brings in Another Familiar Face

By Mark Mwachiro

CNN came out of the Labor Day weekend with a number of big announcements—the network announced the premiere date of Chris Wallace’s new show and the hiring of Dr. Tara Narula and John Miller.

Miller, who begins his role with CNN immediately, is joining the network as its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst. He most recently served as the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism.

Miller’s roots are also embedded in journalism. He is known for landing an extensive on-camera interview with Osama Bin Laden while at ABC News. He has also earned two Peabody Awards, 11 Emmy Awards and an Alfred I. DuPont award.

Like Narula and CNN’s chairman and CEO Chris Licht, Miller previously worked at CBS News.

Licht is now starting to flesh out his vision of his CNN and is bringing on familiar faces to help him execute this task. Last month, he brought in Ryan Kadro as senior vice president of content strategy and development.  Kadro and Licht worked together at CBS This Morning—and Kadro will take the lead in revamping CNN’s morning program, as well as finding a new program for the 9 p.m. slot.

The CNN executive also brought Chris Marlin to be the network’s executive vice president of strategy and business operations. Marlin is a longtime friend of Licht and has been tasked with finding new revenue streams—and optimization opportunities for the organization.

There is a lot of chatter about what direction CNN is taking under its new regime; Licht, who has been keeping his cards close to his chest, has so far revealed that he wants some familiarity within the hallways, as he steers the network towards its new mission.
